Before you get started -- guidelines for the lessons and what you need to know
Hello and welcome to the Supple Spine course! This course is based on improving your movement through the Feldenkrais Method -- helping you to be the best you can be.
Many of us develop unhelpful patterns of movement and compensations, following injuries, illness, repetitive tasks, and other physical and learning difficulties. The Feldenkrais method helps you unwind and unravel these patterns and replace them with with more effective options, through the power of neuroplasticity.
Things to know -- Feldenkrais is not about pushing through pain. While other methods use strengthening, forced stretching and willpower to achieve certain aims, this method uses educational movement, gently guiding the brain and body to find better ways to work together. This is important to remember while working through the course -- always respect your limits, stay well within what you think you can do, and rest as often as you need to (you can pause the recordings at any time without waiting for me to cue a rest).
This method works by teaching you what it means to be comfortable. You should continually strive for comfort while doing these lessons, because thats how your nervous system learns best.
The Supple Spine course currently consists of several audio lessons in which I guide you through a sequence of movements, as well as lesson notes for each. This material may slightly change and evolve over time, with new and bonus material being added, and audio recordings remastered or replaced with higher quality. You will have lifetime access to the course as it evolves, with no requirement to pay any extra on top of your initial purchase price.
You are encouraged to do this course at your own pace, dipping in and out of the material at your convenience, in the privacy of your own home.
To do these lessons you will need a quiet space where you will not be disturbed, with room on the floor to lie down and spread out like a starfish. A yoga mat, carpet, rug or blanket to lie on is recommended, as well as a folded towel to use for head padding. Wear comfortable clothes which do not restrict your movement.
Please note that many of these lessons are live recordings and as such have some background noise and glitches, but try to keep your focus on the content of instuctions, and more specifically the sensations of your own body. Feldenkrais is a mindful practice, with a focus on paying attention to the way you feel, the subtle shifts and changes in your body as you experiment with different movements, and this focus gets easier the more you practice.
Having said that, it is fine to break the longer lessons down into smaller parts if you do not have the time and patience to complete them in one hit. You can also pause and rewind the recordings if you need to.
You are encouraged to take each lesson at your own pace, paying attention to the sensations of your body, and backing off/slowing down/leaving out any parts which cause you discomfort. It takes practice, but you can even do any of the movements in your imagination, if you find them otherwise painful. Using your brain in this way will still help you to clarify your spatial awareness and have beneficial physical effects on the body.
While these lessons are extremely gentle and compliment most other modalities, and are suitable for people with chronic pain and movement difficulties, it is recommend that you seek approval of your doctor before commencing if you have any concerns.
These lessons are not intended as a replacement for professional medical advice, and by undertaking this course you take full personal responsibility for any and all outcomes.
You will need a computer or device capable of playing m4a audio files to play the lessons in this course.
